LockBit apologises with free decryptor after cyber attack against SickKids hospital

On Sunday 18th of December 2022, a teaching and research hospital in Toronto that focuses on providing healthcare to sick children, SickKids experienced a ransomware attack that impacted internal and corporate systems, hospital phone lines, and the website. The incident led to delays in receiving lab and imaging results and resulted in longer patient wait times.

It was then revealed that the LockBit ransomware operation was responsible for the cyber attack as they released a post on their Tor leak site apologising for the attack on the hospital and released a decryptor for free. While also claiming to have removed the responsible affiliate from their operation.

“We formally apologize for the attack on sikkids.ca and give back the decryptor for free, the partner who attacked this hospital violated our rules, is blocked and is no longer in our affiliate program,” – LockBit ransomware operation.
