REvil extorted Apple – $50 Million Ransom demanded

Quanta Computer which is one of the leading notebook manufacturers and one of the business partners with Apple recently have been attacked by REvil ransomware group during April 2021. Quanta is a Taiwan based manufacturer that has a long list of high-profile customers, including Apple, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Alienware, Lenovo, Cisco, and Microsoft. They are also responsible for the manufacture of Apple Watches, Apple MacBook Airs, and Apple MacBook Pros.

The REvil ransomware group claim that they have stolen the schematics and diagrams of apple products like the MacBook components from Quanta computers and want Apple to buy back the stolen data. Or they would post the stolen data online for sale in case Quanta or Apple are not willing to cooperate with the threat actors in paying the ransom.

REvil demands $50 Million

The group has asked Quanta computer to pay a ransom of $50 million to buy back the stolen blueprints. After no cooperation from Quanta, REvil tried to extort Apple to pay the ransom in order for them to return the blueprints.

REvil informed Apple that they are open to negotiations and in case of failing to pay the ransom by the beginning of May, the data will be posted online and will be available for sale.

The threat attackers also informed that along with important blueprints, they do hold other confidential information and relevant drawings as well which will be returned after the ransom is paid.

As an evidence, REvil posted the drawings of upcoming versions of MacBook pros to prove to Apple that they have other confidential drawings as well.

The attackers notified that the Ransom price will be doubled in case it is not paid by the end of April.

Quanta Computers stated that the threat actors only had access to a small number of servers and there had been no impact on the business. They also informed that a team of cyber experts is working with them to investigate the matter.
