NFL’s San Francisco 49ers experience a Blackbyte ransomware attack

On Saturday 12th of February 2022, the BlackByte ransomware group announced that they had stolen data from the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers team during a ransomware attack. The 49ers have confirmed that they have experienced a cyber-attack which has resulted in disruptions in portions of their IT network. It is believed that the incident involved ransomware as the 49ers stated they were in the process of recovering their systems.

The team also confirmed that they immediately initiated an investigation after discovering the incident and had been taking steps to contain the incident while third-party cybersecurity firms and law enforcement was engaged. They also stated that they the incident is limited to their corporate IT network and that there is no evidence of incident spreading to other systems

 The BlackByte ransomware has leaked some of stolen data from the San Francisco 49ers which is a 292MB archive of files that the threat actors have claimed to be 2020 invoices from the 49ers’ network.
