Nigerian Government Ministry Breaches

Nigeria continued to face a challenging cybersecurity landscape, marked by persistent threats to both public institutions and private organizations. While no confirmed breaches of government ministries were publicly reported during this period, multiple sources highlighted the country’s ongoing vulnerability to cyberattacks, including phishing campaigns, malware, and botnet activity. According to Kaspersky, Nigerian users encountered nearly 6.5 million cyber threats in the first half of 2025, underscoring the scale of exposure and the potential risks for government-held data.
Concerns about data security have been heightened by incidents affecting agencies such as the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), where the protection of personal information has been questioned. In response, Nigerian authorities have taken concrete steps to strengthen the nation’s cyber defenses. The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) partnered with Kaspersky through a memorandum of understanding to enhance cybersecurity training, awareness, and threat intelligence sharing. Additionally, the government established the Joint Case Team on Cybercrime, a national cybercrime task force supported by international partners, to coordinate law enforcement and judicial responses to digital offenses.
These measures reflect a formal, proactive commitment by Nigerian authorities to safeguard critical infrastructure and sensitive information. Although direct ministry breaches were not confirmed in August, the ongoing cyber threat environment reinforces the imperative for continuous vigilance, robust protective measures, and strategic coordination among governmental and private stakeholders to mitigate the risk of future incidents.
