On Monday 8th of November 2021, MediaMarkt, Europe’s largest consumer electronics retailer experienced a ransomware attack which has led to IT systems being shut down and disrupts to stores in Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. No ransomware gang has been named yet. Although a MediaMarkt spokesperson has confirmed that the company had been hit by a cyber-attack on the morning of the 8th but they haven’t confirmed that it was ransomware responsible for it.
RTL Nieuws has reported that an internal email sent to employees stated that computers in the affected stores can no longer be used and that employees are requested to unplug the network cables from the cash registers and not to reboot the systems in the hope to stop the spread of the attack. Even though the operations at the affected stores have been disrupted, customers can still go to the stores to buy products but can’t use any online systems like ordering products online.
