On Wednesday 8th of February 2023, the local government of the City of Oakland was hit by a ransomware attack that resulted in them having to take all systems offline until the network is secured and affected services are brought back online. Even though they had to take all systems offline, the city has confirmed that the attack has not affected core services, including 911 dispatch and emergency services resources.
The City’s Information Technology Department is now coordinating with law enforcement to investigate the attack and working on securing and restoring impacted services. They also stated that they are developing a response plan to address the issue according to industry best practices and will share more information as soon as it’s available.
At this current time, no ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack and the City is yet to share any details regarding ransom demands or data theft from compromised systems.
