On Wednesday 2nd 2021, the Steamship Authority that is Massachusetts’ largest ferry service was hit by a ransomware attack which led to ticketing disruptions and customers are unable to book or change vehicle reservations online or by phone. The Steamship Authority confirmed there was no impact to the safety of vessel operations, as the ransomware did not affect radar or GPS functionality.
All the scheduled trips still went ahead without disruption, and customers were able to pay for vehicle and passenger tickets by paying in cash as availability of credit card systems was limited.
The Steamship Authority states that they were working with their team internally, as well as with local, state, and federal officials externally, to address incident. They also stated that during their investigation, they concluded no sensitive information was viewed or downloaded during the attack.
