On Tuesday, 31st of May, the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCCS), Costa Rica’s public health service suffered a ransomware attack which resulted in all the computers on their network being taken offline. The impact of the incident was revealed by employees who had reported on social media that they were told to shut down their computers and unplug them from the networks after all the printers on the network began printing when the incident started.
The Costa Rican Social Security Fund confirmed the incident via a statement issued on Twitter, where they stated that the threat actors hacked into their network “in the early hours of Tuesday.” The Costa Rican Social Security Fund has started an investigation and has stated that citizens’ health and tax information stored in their Unified Digital Health and Centralized Tax-Collection System databases was not compromised. The Costa Rican Social Security Fund is now working on restoring the affected systems and critical services. The ransomware group that was responsible for the incident has been determined as the Hive ransomware group.
