Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) recently disclosed a data breach that affected around 16,000 patients after an employee accidentally sent an internal email to the wrong recipient. While the incident was not the result of a cyberattack or malicious activity, it highlights how a simple human mistake can lead to a major privacy and security issue.
According to the hospital, the exposed information included highly sensitive medical and personal records related to mothers and newborns. The leaked data contained names, patient identification numbers, dates of birth, occupations, income information, physical measurements, pregnancy history, and various medical test results. Fortunately, resident registration numbers and mobile phone numbers were not included in the exposed dataset.
Although the breach was caused by an accidental email rather than a hacker, cybersecurity experts classify such incidents as insider-related security events. These cases often occur when employees unintentionally mishandle sensitive information, creating risks for both organizations and the individuals affected.
Healthcare data remains one of the most valuable types of information for cybercriminals because it can be used for identity theft, fraud, and highly targeted phishing campaigns.
